Voor zijn dertigste had hij nog nooit poëzie geschreven. Hij was verbonden aan het Microbiologisch Instituut van de Tsjecho-Slowaakse Academie voor Wetenschappen in Praag en later aan het Instituut voor Klinische en Experimentele Geneeskunde. In diverse teksten heeft hij betoogd dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek en het schrijven van poëzie fundamenteel gelijklopend zijn.
